Circulation Policies Faculty, Students and Staff


What You May Borrow

  • Books from the general collection circulate to all registered borrowers.
  • Videos, DVDs and CD-ROMs have restricted circulation periods.
  • Materials on reserve have restricted circulation periods and a different fine schedule.
  • Reference books, current periodicals, and materials from the Woodson Research Center do not circulate.
  • Materials from the Brown Fine Arts Library, Gilbert and Ruth Whitaker Business Information Center, and Kelley Center for Government Publications and Microforms Department circulate with some restrictions.

Borrower's Responsibilities

  • Use your Rice photo ID to check out material at the Circulation Desk.  Rice IDs are not transferable
  • You are responsible for all materials and fines charged to your account.
  • It is your responsibility to monitor your user status. View your user status online or inquire at the Circulation Desk.
  • Family members are eligible for Rice IDs. Some restrictions may apply for dependent children.
  • Inform the Circulation Desk of lost IDs and address changes immediately, since you are responsible for all items charged to your account.
  • Return on-time material directly to the Circulation Desk or to the Book Returns at the entrances of the library.
  • If your items are overdue, please return them directly to the Circulation Desk and pay overdue fines.


Online User Services

Use our online user services to view your user status, renew books, place holds or recalls and to request items from storage. Obtain your personal PIN information at the Circulation Desk.

To access Fondren Library's online user services, Visit http://library.rice.edu, select "Catalog" from the menu bar at the top of the page, select Fondren Catalog, select the desired service and enter the following information:

  • User ID or Rice E-mail name IN CAPITAL LETTERS
  • Rice Library PIN

Loan Periods

  • Undergraduates    ...................................28 days
    • Graduate Students,
    • Post-Doctoral and Research Associates,
    • Staff,
    • Lecturers,
    • Adjunct and Visiting Faculty...................3 due dates per year 4/20, 8/20, and 12/20
  • Faculty........................................................1 due date annually, 5/1
  • Family........................................................28 days with a 15 item limit


Recalls

  • Books that are recalled must be returned by the recall due date.
  • Materials needed for course reserves are subject to immediate recall.

Renewals

  • Materials can be renewed online or at the Circulation Desk.



Fines

  • As a courtesy, the library sends notices for overdue, lost, and recalled materials; however, you are responsible for all fines incurred on your library account even if you do not receive an overdue notice.
  • Borrowing privileges and online user services are suspended with one overdue item or an accumulation of $5.00 in fines.
  • Student registration, transfer of credits, grades, and graduation may be blocked until all materials are returned and outstanding fines are paid.
  • After 4 weeks, fines and bills on student accounts will be transferred to the Cashier's Office. Charges may not be appealed after that time.

Special Circulation Services

  • Holds:  You may request that a book charged out to another borrower be held for you when it is returned.
  • Recalls: You may request that a book charged out to another borrower be returned early. All library materials are subject to recall by other Rice borrowers.
  • Searches: You may ask the Circulation staff to search for a book you cannot find on the shelf. When the book is available you will be notified.
  • Study Rooms:The library has locked study rooms available for Rice students, faculty, and staff only. Keys to the study rooms are available at the Circulation Desk and use of the rooms is limited to four hours. A Rice photo ID is required to check out a key. Rooms may not be reserved.
  • Library Service Center (LSC) Requests: Items retrieved from the LSC may be borrowed from the Reserve Desk.  Please allow one business day for processing and retrieval of requests.
  • Interlibrary Loan: Inter Library Loan items can be picked up and returned at the circulation desk.


Lost Or Damaged Material

  • If library materials are damaged while charged to your account, you will be billed for the cost of the repair.
  • Materials that are lost or cannot be repaired are billed at current replacement value plus nonrefundable processing fees.
  • All lost or damaged materials remain the property of Fondren Library.
  • If library materials are already damaged, alert Circulation staff before checking out the items.

Copiers

Self-service copy machines are located throughout the library. Copier machines accept copy cards, and a limited number also accept cash.

A color copier is located in the Brown Fine Arts Library.

Change

Change for bills up to $10 is available at the Circulation Desk.


Printing

Laser printers are attached to most public use computers.  These printers operate with copy cards and the charge for printing is ten cents per page. Owlnet printers automatically charge to Rice computing accounts.

Wireless access

Wireless access is available in the library.

No Smoking

Fondren Library is a smoke-free building.

Food & Drink

Drinks must be in a covered container and food is restricted to the fourth-floor coffee lounge near Elevator A. 


Telephones

Local calls may be made using the telephones located by the first-floor ATM near Elevator A and the telephone near Stair D in the center of the first floor.  Dial 9 for an off-campus number.
