Collection Management

Titles Proposed for off site housing or withdrawal

Collection management is essential to the Fondren Library's ongoing role as a vital information resource for the Rice University community. Collection management includes replacement of worn or mutilated materials; addition of second copies for highly popular materials; binding and withdrawal of dated materials; recommending titles for other types of preservation intervention, including off site housing of low-use materials.

Selection Guidelines for Off-site Shelving

Titles Proposed for:

Many of these activities occur as routine functions, for example: as comprehensive cumulations of an index (such as Readers Guide) are received, the old issues are discarded; as shelving or circulation staff find worn or damaged materials, these materials are evaluated for repair or withdrawal and replacement; non-circulating, duplicate copies of older titles or earlier editions are withdrawn; regularly scheduled circulation reports suggest titles in such demand as to require additional copies.

Other activities are less routine and require a process more similar to acquiring new materials for the collection -- to be successfully managed, withdrawal and off-site housing of library titles are best done in consultation with faculty and students.

Successful management of the Fondren Library collection -- tailoring the collection to the unique character of the Rice academic community -- requires a cooperative partnership between Rice scholars and the library staff.

We seek and welcome your feedback on collection management.
